"From the start, when it was the instrument of the wood-god Pan, the flute has been associated with pure (some might say impure) energy. Its sound releases something naturally untamed, as if a squirrel were let loose in a church"--Seamus Heaney

As a performer, I am fascinated by sound. I would applaud a composer setting squirrels loose in a grand piano! Like John Cage using nails and wires and stones to transform sound. I am drawn to the materiality of sounds, their unique textures and resonances, and I've devoted many hours exploring extended techniques on the flute in order to produce very particular sounds. The mesmerizing percussive techniques of Sciarrino, the brushstrokes and palpable silences of Takemitsu, the oscillating microtones of Stockhausen.

My current musical passion is Irish music, which offers its own fascinating technical challeneges--the unique timbre and rhythms of Irish music demand a wholly set of ways to create sound!
